The Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation
  • Mission - To educate and engage visitors by sharing our rich history, our compelling stories and our authentic connections to California’s past and thus inspiring a sense of community.

  • Vision - To be widely recognized as a valued cultural and historical asset exploring California’s past, shedding light on the present and imagining the future.

  • Values - RLAF values inquiry-based exploration, interactive and hands-on experiences, and educational programming, grounded in the inherent nature of the site, that sparks curiosity, informs and instructs, and instills a desire to know more.

History of the Foundation

In 1968, the Bixby family deeded the 7.5-acre site to the City of Long Beach. The City opened the site to the public in 1970. In 1984, the Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation was formed with the specific purpose of operating and restoring Rancho Los Alamitos Historic Ranch & Gardens with the goal of preserving the site for the benefit of the broadest possible community and developing the rancho’s considerable educational potential. The Foundation assumed responsibility for the site in 1986 and operates the historic property as a public/private cooperative venture with the owner, the City of Long Beach.

The Foundation prepared a comprehensive and award-winning four-volume master plan which was approved by the City in 1989. With the completion of the cutting-edge seismic retrofitting of the historic ranch house in 2017-2018, only one of the master plan’s 167 recommendations remains to be implemented. With most of the site’s capital improvement needs addressed, the Foundation turned its attention to its purpose and long-term sustainability. With the support of generous funders, the Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation launched on a self-evaluation and strategic planning process to assess the organization’s potential and aspirations. In December 2018, the RLA Foundation Board of Directors adopted the 2019-2024 Strategic Plan for Rancho Los Alamitos. The strategic plan recommits the Foundation’s energies to serving the community and region with education at the forefront of its mission.

Our Commitment

The Rancho Los Alamitos Foundation endorses and supports the Framework for Reconciliation adopted by the City of Long Beach on June 23, 2020. The RLA Foundation commits to supporting and modeling an inclusive, equitable, and diverse organization and community.
