Spanish bluebells thrive in our Friendly Garden, which began as a collection of plants received from Florence Bixby’s friends in the late 1920s. While we practice social distancing, stay safe & stay tuned for new virtual opportunities from Rancho Los Alamitos!  #RanchoFromHome

'Forest Pansy' beginning to bloom at the entrance to the Rancho Center Spring has Sprung at Rancho Los Alamitos

Pictured at left is Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’

Several of these (a modern variety of ‘Eastern Redbud’) are blooming around the entrance to the Rancho Center.

It is an absolutely glorious tree. Forest Pansy is a medium size tree, deciduous (loses its leaves fall-spring). Nonetheless, it provides year-round interest. It is naturally beautiful, horizontal  branching structure, long-lasting, early season blossoms, gorgeous purple foliage (heart-shaped) through the growing season.

(Leap Day!)

This organizes the leaves following the Narcissus blooming period. The leaves continue to photosynthesize thus capturing the sun’s energy and transmitting it to the bulbs below ground - building strong energy in the plants’ underground bulbs (for a bigger bloom each subsequent year!)
